Rockpool restoration
Ngāti Manuhiri have been working with government agencies for many years to protect our coastline.
In 2010, Whangateau Harbour was closed to cockle and pipi harvesting, and our Trustees and members have been working towards further protections for shellfish and other taonga species as pressure on our rocky reefs and intertidal areas has grown.

Rockpool closures
In 2025, we submitted an application under section 186A of the Fisheries Act to prohibit the harvesting of shellfish and seaweeds from rockpools in our rohe.
The Minister for Oceans and Fisheries approved our application in early 2026, with the closure coming into effect for two years from 12 March 2026.
