Tuia ki te rangi, Tuia ki te papa
Tuia ki te moana, Tuia tātou
E rongo te pō, E rongo te ao
Haumi e, Hui e, Tāiki e!
The Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, Mana Whenua and mandated iwi authority, have placed a rāhui at Okakari Point Marine Reserve (more commonly referred to as “Goat Island”) from 7:00pm Wednesday 28 December 2022 and will be lifted at 7:00pm on Friday 30 December 2022.
What does this mean for you?
A rāhui (a physical and spiritual mechanism) sets a temporary prohibition around the rāhui area in order to acknowledge the death and to express our sympathy to the whānau of the deceased. It provides time for tapu sacredness to dissipate following the death allowing time for healing and recovery of the natural elements at place as well as people; in particular the grieving whānau.
To show respect all swimmers, surfers, divers and boat/kayak/SUP users in the area are asked to consider using alternative areas during the rāhui. (As this is a marine reserve, fishing and collecting of shellfish is already prohibited).
Ngā mihi
The Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
