Ngāti Manuhiri Say No To Landfill
Kia ora koutou,
On behalf of the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, we want to acknowledge our whanau, friends, supporters, and alliances who have continued to oppose Waste Management efforts to establish a mega landfill in the Dome Valley.
Recently we were targeted by Waste Management General Manager Ian Kennedy in the latest Mahurangi Matters article implying we are seeking a deal.
We have not met 20 times, but we have met with them to view the site and operations. We completed a Cultural Values Assessment (CVA) as part of responding to the Resource Management Act, and our findings found huge risks and impacts. We have not sought any deal and are opposed to their application, nor have we ever given our support to Waste Management at any time.
We will not be dissuaded from our mission and know that together we will overcome the challenges.
We say the landfill destroys our whenua, awa, and moana. We say the landfill harms the well-being of whanau and the community. We say Waste Management do your due diligence and find another location. We say NO to landfill!
An official statement will be in the next issue of Mahurangi Matters.
