Notice of Appeal: Wayby Valley Landfill

Waste Management is seeking resource consent for the construction and operation of a new regional landfill facility with a footprint of approximately 60 hectares, and with the capacity to contain approximately 25.8 million cubic metres of municipal solid waste, and ancillary infrastructure, at 1232 State Highway 1, Wayby Valley.

The Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust oppose this consent and will continue to advocate for the protection of our ancestral lands.

As of 5pm, Monday 5th July 2021, the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust has lodged a Notice of Appeal.

Ngāti Manuhiri hold rangatiratanga over the area in which the application is proposed to be located.

It was within this region that Ngāti Manuhiri developed their own distinct identity as a tribal grouping, joining with, and forming strategic alliances with others to cement their place as tangata whenua of the region.

Proposed consent conditions imposed by the majority decision fail to address these more than minor and significant adverse effects and do not provide certainty of positive or effective environmental outcomes.
