Juvenile Great White Shark Washed up on Omaha Beach

A juvenile Great White Shark was discovered early this morning by members of the public and notified to the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, Mana Whenua, and mandated authority for the area, with kaumatua arriving shortly after.

Gifted the name Mangatawhiri by Terrence 'Mook' Hohneck, Chairman of the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, the juvenile shark was taken to Massey University to undergo a necropsy.

The traditional name for Omaha is Mangatawhiri or the Mangatawhiri Block in the Native Land Courts. Manga refers to the bay and Tāwhiri refers to the wind.

Thank you to Te Papa Atawhai, Omaha Surf Life Saving, and to the members of the general public that helped move Mangatawhiri off the beach this morning.
